“Once you’re aware of something, you see it everywhere.
“How does that impact your family, how much of your lift is about that? I was able to draw out the impact it would have had on Katherine’s upbringing without being too focused on Masonic traditions.” Leaving Work at WorkĬonsidering the world of secret codes and hidden meanings in which The Lost Symboltakes place, it might have been easy for Curry to let her the story bleed into her own life. “Rather than digging up information on Masons, I found it more useful to speak with one of our crew members whose father is a 32 nd-degree Mason,” she says. This same idea plays into how Curry researched the history of the Masons, which plays prominently into the series. “She has more of a big-picture view and doesn’t solve puzzles in the same analytical way that Langdon does. “Langdon’s instinct when he looks at a page is to try to work it out, but Katherine whips out her phone she’s not going to let her ego get in the way of finding this information as quickly as possible,” Curry says. Langdon puzzles over the mystery, but Solomon is more pragmatic.

Take, for example, an early episode of the series when the pair is trying to decipher what could be a secret message hidden in a page of Hebrew text. While Robert Langdon (played by Ashley Zukerman) might be an expert in the way of the ancient world, Katherine Solomon is definitely a modern scientist. Her work was exciting and showed me a lot about who Katherine could be, because so much of the show is about the perceived duality between science and spirituality, and Katherine is neither a material skeptic nor a believer, she’s in a space between the two.” Consider the Character Marilyn Schlitz, who’s arguably an inspiration for Katherine, or at least she was for me. Katherine from the book is not Katherine from the series she’s 15 years younger, and as for her relationship with Peter Solomon, she’s his daughter, not his sister.” Still, she notes, “The series is a bit removed from the book, as we’re setting it up as a prequel to the Dan Brown stories audiences have seen before.

She had seen The Da Vinci Code film but hadn’t read Brown’s novels, so she dove into The Lost Symbol in print and binged all of the movie adaptations of the books. “That was something that wasn’t new to me, though the fanbase around the Robert Langdon universe was.”
“So many of the characters I’ve played in my career have been based on previously existing properties,” she says, noting roles in American Pastoral, Blair Witch, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
For a world as complicated and beloved as the one Brown has created, it was important for Curry to learn everything she could.
